So you started a Facebook Page, started posting up stuff about your product, and nobody seems to care. It happens, more than you think. None of us wake up in the morning, jump on Facebook hoping to see what advertisements are going to pop up all over the News Feed. If you only offer content about your product, chances are people will just start ignoring it anyway.
What is the 80/20 rule?
We are not talking about Pareto Principle of cause and effect or the financial distribution of wealth in the nation. We are applying an 80-20 rule in regards to our social media strategy.
It is a guideline of what people will accept in business content because the rest of the content is relationship building and entertaining. In other words, you can talk about your product 20% of the time as long as you balance it with 80% worth of being social.
Is it a perfect ratio? Of course not. It is just a guide to get you started, especially if you are posting 100% about your product with zero results. You will find that being social online isn’t about promoting, it is about engaging. The keyword in social media is social for a reason.
As with any rule, there are clauses. If your product is entertainment, you can ignore this rule. If your product is artistic you will find that talking about your product is the best way to share what you company is about.
We don’t exactly advise people to throw out your best sales pitch 20% of the time either. Frankly people still ignore those posts, even though you get more visibility. We like to work on making your posts personal to your audience by removing some of the sales pitch to get your message across, but that is another topic all together.
